Our 3rd Transnational Meeting in Brno has ended. We met, worked and had fun together during the week of September 23-27, 209.
On Monday, after an official welcome speech by school's headmaster and an informal walk around the school we started with a workshop on Safety on the Internet. The presentation and workshop was a peer to peer education as it was prepared by a students‘ club from Prague secondary school “Smíchovská střední průmyslová škola“. Participants discussed anonymity and the lack of it on the internet and giving up our privacy by one click when we agree with cookies and other personal info gathering tools. They learned how VPN (Virtual Private Network), Geoblocking and anonymous browsers work. They talked about Deep Web, bitcoins, discussed what malware and spyware is and how to protect themeselves when online. In the afternoon students attended Treasure Hunt, a teambuilding and sightseeing activity using digital tools in the centre of Brno.
On Tuesday morning students worked in two big groups in interactive workshops The impact of Digitalization and Robotization on Employment held by NGO “NaZemi“. They practiced their critical thinking skills discussing positive and negative aspects of new technologies and their impact on jobs in the future. They heard stories of peole who already in present are working in such jobs. In the end they made posters creating a utopian or dystopian vision of the future. In the afternoon they visited a functionalist Villa Tugendhat designed by German architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, which was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001. There they started gathering stories for their final creative task – podcasts. In the evening everybody had fun at a party with tranditionala Czech music and dances.
On Wednesday during a cultural event – a storytelling visit to the capital city Prague – students continued gathering stories and legends from Czech and Jewish history and recorded sounds of Prague for their podcasts.
On Thursday in the first workshop Truth Matters: Finding Facts in an Era of Fake News held by Mgr. Petr Gongala from NGO “Demagog.cz“ they learned about various factchecking organizations around the world and and again used critical thinking techniques trying to fact-check fictitious politicians‘ statements based on statistic facts. Afterwards they played a fact-checking game called Fakescape created by a team of political sciences students from Masaryk University in Brno. In the afternoon they visited a local professional radio studio “Proglas“.
Friday was dedicated to creating podcasts working in mixed international teams. After recording spoken part of their podcasts in a school technical audio studio and learning how to work with Audacity, an open source digital audio editor, they edited their podcasts in school computer rooms. In the afternoon we all enjoyed listening to all podcasts on varios topics: “Sounds of Prague“, “Sounds of Brno“, “Prague stories“ and “Brno stories and legends“. Then, after a short concert by school’s choir “Schola“ and headmaster’s final speech, we said our farewells.
We are all looking forward to meeting again, this time in Turkey in March 2020.
